Day One at TGS

JP Button, Tokyo Game Show by: Corinth

Tokyo Game Show

I can’t believe it’s so late! I wanted to get all my thoughts and pictures up earlier but my camera ran out of batteries. Today I wandered around Tokyo Game Show looking for anything and everything related to FFXI (and a bit more).

Let JP Button be your ticket to Tokyo Game Show!

(FFXI’s Corny ad campaign must be contagious….)

Some various things I saw today:

FFXI’s ad campaign (which you can watch now online) was near the end of the long string of videos they show in the open theatre. I tried to watch people’s reactions and I saw a lot of smiles and giggles. All the other ads were your typical video game ads so that probably helped it stand out too.

SE’s new game in the Crystal Chronicals series, Echoes of Time, also had a trailer in the open theatre. I mentioned it in my previous post because of the cat that looked like Cait Sith and the whole “time” issue. When I watched the trailer, I noticed one of the races you can choose from looks like…. Mithra!! They are so cute all chibi-sized!! It’ll be interesting to see if they use the name Mithra for the race or give it a new name for the CC series.

The Final Fantasy XIII trailers as well as ads for a few other games are only being shown in the closed theatre. I went to the SE booth as soon as I got into the hall but the closed theatre tickets had already been given out for the day.

Microsoft’s booth is right next to SE with all of their Xbox 360 stuff. Rather than play up their FF titles, SE is really pushing their mobile content and the RPG Project with Microsoft. This may explain why there is so little for FFXIII as well as the rumored new Kingdom Hearts game.

The FFXI merchandise was the first to sell out from the SE merchandise booth. Must have been lots of FFXI fans there early in the morning!

I talked with the media coordinator at the SE booth and tried to ask a few questions but, unsurprisingly, they don’t have any information to give out right now. I asked if they could give any details on what we can expect to hear about at VanaFest or FanFest but…. no luck. Ah well.

I had a chance to try a few of the games at the SE booth. The Pingu Penguin game was pretty cute. You go around helping other Penguins with their problems. I was able to juggle, fish, and make popcorn. The mobile content was your typical puzzle type games that could have been any brand.

Tomorrow I’m going to go back and see what else I can find as well as post my thoughts on some of the non-SE titles at TGS2008.

Good night from Tokyo!
