New Campaign for FFXI in Japan
News by: Corinth
A credit card number is required to pay for any account fees for FFXI in America. However, people with Japanese accounts can pay using a greater variety of options. One of these options is WebMoney. You can purchase WebMoney points (1 yen = 1 point) and use them to pay for a variety of services. It is very similar to how people use Paypal. You can send people money, buy goods on Yahoo! Auctions, purchase money, or even pay for online games like FFXI. It is possible to buy WebMoney points at a convenience store or even set up an account online with a credit card.
Using WebMoney for FFXI was also recently in the news for being used by suspected RMT groups to create fraudulent accounts.
Starting February 2nd, WebMoney has teamed up with Square Enix to create a new FFXI promotion. This promotion is directed at players who haven’t played in a long time and qualify for the “Return Home to Vana’diel” campaign or people who have never played and start with the 14-day free trial. Current players do not qualify for this new campaign. The WebMoney campaign will last until April 15th. If you use WebMoney to pay for something FFXI-related either through PlayOnline or the Square-Enix e-STORE, you can register for the promotion online via WebMoney’s special website.
Drawings will be held once a month. There will be a separate drawing for people qualifying under each of the two promotions. In each drawing, 3 winners will receive 8064 points (6 months worth), 30 winners will get 4032 points (3 months), and 100 people will receive 1344 points (1 month).
An additional 50 people will receive a special WebMoney card with an original FFXI design. While not written on the site, the sample picture of the card puts the value of the prize at 500 points.

WebMoney has been available since day one. It’s mentioned in my JP PS2 launch version manual, and was an option in the billing information when I first registered in July of 2002.
IIRC, there were three forms of web money accepted then, one being called OCN, and another credit card is accepted too, called JCN.
Japan, AFAIK, has nothing like CheckCards available from VISA or MasterCard. USA does, so they used those cards as universal payment, and didn’t bother to find another payment type to accept, since debit, credit, and prepaid are offered by those companies. Also, USA doesn’t really have something like Web Money that is so easily available, and what we do have requires a credit card anyway.

FYI, you can also use (and I recommend for security) “refillable” credit cards. This will allow you to put only a certain amount of money on the card without risk of ruining your credit if it gets stolen. Many check cashing facilities will offer those cards. Jut pay attention to the fine print and fees as that’s how those card companies make their money.

I don’t know if it has been around since the very beginning but it has been around for a long time.

@Corinth, If it has been long time, I guess that kinda lowers the odds of other places getting those prepaid gamecard and such, huh? I wonder if there’s any particular reason FFXI is the only MMO I know of that’s so limited on payment options…
