Hi folks,

Just wanted to touch base to let you know that the raw data has been published on our project site, and we're writing up the key findings in a more concise and easily digested format. School starts on Thursday, and we're moving into the next phase of the project. This semester, the class will dive into Final Fantasy XIV, and we hope to see you in Hydaelyn.

Thanks for all of the terrific feedback you provided in our survey. It has been very helpful.

Comment on Talking Points – Return Questions from JP Players by zeroumus

•Have you ever had someone from your own country do something bad to you? For example, they invite you to replace someone, and when you get there, they just disband. Do you hold a grudge against the person who invited you in that case, or do you think “Oh well,” and just forget about it?

-all the time. I get frustrated, but usually dont hold a grudge. I would likely giev the guy another chance down the road.

2
•I heard that on foreign boards there is a list of useful Japanese players that will help people out. Do you really have such a list?

- never heard of it

3
•I don’t go out of my way to invite NA players to my party, but NA players often invite Japanese players. What are the benefits and drawbacks of inviting a Japanese player to your party?

The benifit is usually we are getting a disicplined player who is in it for a long time. The dissadvantage is we can no communicate anything complex with the player. A JP player maybe become frustrated a little easier.

4
•Has there been a time when a Japanese player has hurt or insulted you? Also, what are some actions that are normal for us that you find disagreeable? I’m interested to know and would like to hear your thoughts.

I have never been insulted by a JP player even if initially i may have taken offence.

5
•Lots of NA players exclusively use Auto-Translate when recruiting for Assault and other activities. Does this mean that you are targeting Japanese players as well? I’m fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Missions and Assault, but I barely know any English, and worry if I should even send a tell.

we over use the auto translate feature for enlgish and JP players because alot of the names in FFXI are un-natural for us to spell.

6
•I’ve had a foreign player say to me, “I hate Japanese people.” But Final Fantasy is a Japanese game. If you hate us, why play?

probabbly a guy who took something the wrong way in thinking JP are stuck up. To be honest, we really dont care if the game is JP, only a small minority of NA players try to keep it culturely japenese.

7
•A lot of time has passed since service began in Japan, and you barely see any new subscribers coming in. Are there new NA players still joining?

I know alot of NA players that come back, quit and come back

8
•In Japan, players that play long periods of time, have many Lvl 75 jobs, possess tons of high-level equipment, and who are usually filled with prejudice and contempt are called 廃人 . Is there a similar name you use for NA players who are like that?

I dont think we really have a name for them in NA, but we definatly make fun of people like this, and in severe cases will look down upon these people. Usually our elders find it easier to look down upon us.

9
•Is there opposition against the practice of RMT or the use of third party tools? What do you do if your friend or Linkshell uses them? How do you feel about RMT業者 (gyou sha) or gil farmers?

I think there is more wiggle room in NA for cheating. If in doupt, in NA, if people cant agree if something is cheating, its generally tolerated.

10
•In Japan, there are some people who are huge subligar fans. Are there any amongst foreign players, or is there another piece of equipment that is especially popular?

I am not ware of any NA players obsessed with the subligar. If it has stats we will like it. But for visual appeal, we consider it homosexual.

It's also difficult to get started as you need to obtain the game on disc format. It being an MMORPG does not help shops on being interested about stocking it.

Also when Square-Enix tried to solve this problem (the 14 day trial thing) it did help the RMT immensely by making it easier for them to make farming bots.

Square-Enix realized that and the JPN 14 day trial service has been "fixed" to be difficult to RMTs while the NA 14 day trial has been completely removed.

Lesson learned: The RMT is the enemy. :\

The access barrier of a monthly subscription cost for XI likely has the most to do with its lower percentage, in addition to likely attracting a different range of ages who play.

Actually, when I was in Japan and talked about "Fainaru Fantajii", most of my friends replied something like "ah, you meah 'FaiFan' ?!". The term 'FaiFan' was more common to them than the full title itself (and 'DoraKuwe' was considered the best RPG series anyway. It's really more famous in Japan than the FF series).

The Japanese names usually stay the same. That's why you'll see translations change as new versions of the same game come out. They're conforming to the established English equivalents, which didn't exist in earlier gaming generations.

On top of that, games like 2, 3 & 5 only had fan translations for a long time before getting official releases.
